Track colour = position accuracy:

Accuracy comes from the receiver's GST sentence (1σ, metres) or the browser's own estimate. Without either, the colour follows the fix type (RTK fixed, float, DGPS, GPS). The track is saved every 10 s, so a crash loses at most a few seconds. Keep this tab open while recording – iPads stop location updates when the screen locks.

Codes are offered when editing a waypoint and for new waypoints. Any code can be typed, even if it is not in a list. Extra codes with the same letters as a BC code replace the BC description (you are warned). Three-letter codes avoid clashes with the two-letter BC codes. Reads NMEA 0183 DPT (preferred), DBT or DBS for depth and MTW for water temperature, e.g. from a Lowrance HDS through a Yacht Devices USB gateway. Use the same port when one gateway carries both GPS and depth; use a separate port when the GPS/RTK receiver has its own USB cable.

Reconnaissance grade: no heave, pitch or roll correction and no tide reduction. Depths are below the water surface at the time of the survey, not Chart Datum. A sounding is only logged when the GPS fix is less than 2 s old. Saved every 10 s. Not for navigation.

Notes

Horizontal positions are stored in WGS 84. The antenna offset is applied using the true heading (HDT/THS), or the course over ground above 0.5 kn when no heading is received.

NRCan DEM – about the data and local (offline) DEM files

Depths come from the NRCan DEM and are read only for waypoints (when added or moved, or with ⬇ on a project), for the points you click when measuring, and for depth profiles.

NRCan/DFO west coast DEM: land and seabed elevation on a 10 m grid compiled from several agencies. Values are elevations (negative = below the DEM zero), not depths below Chart Datum – check the NRCan metadata for its vertical datum before using it for reporting. Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada. Not for navigation.

How to make the file from the NRCan download (QGIS)

1. Unzip canada_west_coast_DEM_original.gdb.zip. In QGIS (3.30 or newer) open the Browser panel, expand the .gdb and drag the raster onto the map.
2. Optional – smaller file: Raster › Extraction › Clip Raster by Extent to your working area, or make one file per region (the app can use several).
3. Raster › Conversion › Translate (Convert Format): output file .tif, and under “Additional command-line parameters” enter
-of COG -co COMPRESS=DEFLATE -co PREDICTOR=FLOATING_POINT -co BIGTIFF=IF_SAFER
4. Keep the coordinate system (BC Albers, EPSG:3005). UTM and latitude/longitude also work.
5. Put the .tif in your local folder (e.g. GPC Field Data\Reference) or the shared folder’s Reference folder with OneDrive “Always keep on this device”, then press “Add DEM file(s)”.
Large files are fine: the app reads only a few kilobytes around each point.

Auto-sync pauses while a waypoint or route is being edited; recordings sync after you stop them. Deleting a project here does not delete it from either folder – it can be opened again from the list above.
